Each graphic begins with an idea from the reporter. Depending on the assignment, some allow for more creative liberty than others, but this concept is what makes each assignment something new and challenging. Through communication, discussions, and sketches, the end result needs to be reflective of journalism while intriguing audiences.

Collaborating with reporters on articles, each graphic is a visual representation of article content. This allows online, and print readers, to be initially drawn into the article with a visual.

Each design is created using a mix of Procreate, Photoshop, and Illustrator depending on the style that is needed for the graphic. I try to create a compelling visual using details from articles. I maintain an open line of communication with reporters and editors to make sure the graphic goes well with the article and is published on time.

I start by looking at references, especially of buildings and people, to establish the look and mood that I want to recreate. I then proceed to sketch ideas and go on to line art. Once I have altered the design to my liking, I add color and texture to provide some appeal. In terms of color, I have a palette that I created in my first semester at the paper, allowing all my graphics to be consistent.
